Als ich zum ersten Mal den Namen "Sweet Papa Lowdown" hörte, glaubte ich, dass es sich um einen mir unbekannten alten Bluesmusiker handle. Ich wurde aber rasch eines Besseren belehrt: eine  kanadische Gruppe mit jungen Musikern spielt hier ganz fantastischen Jazz und Blues. Traditionelles und Altes, vermischt mit neuen Elementen und Instrumenten ergeben ganz interessante Klangbilder. 

Endlich mal eine Gruppe, die nicht einfach die alten Musiker oder Bands kopiert, sondern mit eigenen Arrangements eigene Wege geht, aber die Wurzeln des Jazz und Blues respektiert. Chris spielt hier wieder mal seinen unverkennbaren Tailgate-Stil mit der Posaune und ergänzt die Gruppe hervorragend.

Welches sind meine Favoriten? Ist es der wieder einmal in Erinnerung gebrachte Apex Blues oder Diddy Wa Diddy? 'Till Times Get Better oder Mean Daddy Blues?  Ich kann es nicht sagen - it's all good music.

 

When I first heard the name "Sweet Papa Lowdown" I could not imagine what type of music I was going to listen to. I assuemd that Sweet Papa Lowdown was an old blues musician. Surprisingly I listened to young  Canadian jazz musicians, playing great jazz and blues music, mixed with new elements and interesting new sounds (the mandoline and flugabone).

At last a group that does not merely copy the old songs of  late jazz and blues stars! They go their own way with new arrangements, but always respecting  traditional roots. Chris Barber fits well with this Canadian band - just listen to his tailgate trombone....

Which tune is my favourite? Is it Jimmy Noone's Apex Blues oder Diddy Wa Diddy? Till Times Get Better or Mean Daddy Blues? I can't say - it's all good music
