Diese CD ist eine
echte Überraschung! Die Ken Colyer Jazzmen kurz vor ihrer Trennung zur Chris
Barber Jazz Band.
This CD is a big surprise! It’s a live recording of a concert at London's Royal Festival Hall by the Ken Colyer Jazzmen only a few weeks before the split with Colyer and the formation of Chris Barber’s Jazz Band (May 31, 1954). For a long time the original tapes were thought to be lost, but now they have been found and have been carefully remastered by Upbeat Jazz. On this CD you can hear the beginnings of the change in style that led to the split from Ken Colyer just six weeks later. The quality of the recordings is quite good, although they do not match the sound quality of the Chris Barber Concert in October 1954 (also at the Royal Festival Hall). It is very interesting to compare these two recordings: while Chris changed the repertoire of the band within a few months, he did not give up proved titles of the Colyer period. May I draw your attention to the four skiffle numbers. The CD contains the only version of the Cotton Song with Lonnie Donegan. Please note that Bruce Turner does not play on Bourbon Street Parade (as stated on the CD), but on Black & Tan Fantasy. This is a CD that will please not only the Ken Colyer collector but also the Chris Barber fan. A. Wandfluh/October 2004
